Rabbi Zeitlin

Biography

Rabbi Harry Zeitlin was born in Denver, Colorado in 1952. Growing up in a contemporary orthodox setting, he attended Hillel Academy, the Jewish day school there. He first began his talmud studies with his grandfather, Philip Zeitlin z"l and with Rabbi Israel Rosenfeld, author of "Gemara L'Maschilim", perhaps the best available published instructional text for gemara.

He also studied in Denver with Rabbi Shloime B.C. Twerski z"l, a member of the brilliant chassidic family, and one of the most remarkable people he ever encountered. Rabbi Daniel Goldberger z"l, a universally loved congregational and community rabbi (and close family friend) and Rabbi Bernard Eisenman, the first conservative rabbi in Denver were also strong influences

Studies continued with, among others, Rabbis Avraham Lapin z"l and Yitzchak Adlerstein in Los Angeles. In Jerusalem, Rabbi Zeitlin continued his studies with Rabbi Nissan Applebaum who taught him to enjoy, rather than merely read, talmud and with Rabbi Chaim Zimmerman z"l, one of the generations most independent and original thinkers. He continues to learn with David Friedman <www.kosmic-kabbalah.com/>, a well-known Zefat artist and kabbalist.

An orthodox, or perhaps "paradox" rabbi, Rabbi Zeitlin is also very active in the Renewal movement and has been a board member of Ohalah, the Renewal Rabbis organization since 2004. He's been blessed and privileged to count Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi as a teacher.

He has many years of teaching experience both privately, through Congregation Beth Ha'Ari as well as through Seattle institutions including Congregation Beth Shalom (conservative), Community High School of Jewish Studies (interdenominational through Seattle Federation) and Eitz Or (renewal) and the Jewish community on Whidbey Island in the Puget Sound.

A father of four, Rabbi Zeitlin is also a professional artist (see Art is the Spiritual), and a jazz musician. A graduate from Yale (B.A., 1974) and a former writer and filmmaker, he currently lives and teaches in Seattle, WA.
